ODIN Download and Installation Guide for iOS Devices
ODIN (Open Dynamic Interaction Network) is a smartphone app that allows for dynamic participant-driven data collection. The ODIN server receives your answers to questions from the ODIN app.

Step 1. Go to Settings ⟶ General ⟶ Battery ⟶ Battery Health and check your battery health. If the Battery Health is < 80%, please email the study research assistant immediately and let them know what your phone's battery health is. After that, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Go the App Store, search for "ODIN Study" and press "Get" to install the ODIN app

Step 3: You will be presented with the Terms & Conditions. Read them and once you scroll to the end, an option to accept them will appear.

Step 4: Ensure you have Wi-Fi or cellular data before attempting this step. You will see a registration screen below. Type in your 15-letter code (denoted below with a red arrow) or scan the provided QR code by clicking the scanner button (denoted below with a green arrow) and then press Register.

Step 5 Prepare to receive and answer the prompts as follows when you press Register. Follow the next steps carefully.
a. Location Permissions: Two prompts.
  • For the first prompt, choose Allow While Using App
  • For the second prompt, choose Change to Always Allow
b. Bluetooth Permissions choose Allow.
c. Motion Data Permissions, choose Allow.

Congratulations! ODIN installation is complete. When you bring ODIN into the foreground, you can press the home button (bottom left) to see the questions available for you to answer. Each question appears as a tile. Every question has a time limit by which you must answer it to receive credit for participation. Clicking on a tile will show you the question and allow you to provide an answer. If a question expires, it will appear in an "Expired" section, and you will not get credit for it.

Important Note 1. For ODIN to work, it must ALWAYS be running in the background (rest assured, we have tested it to ensure it does not increase battery drain). Please do not kill ODIN by swiping upwards in the task view. If the ODIN app is killed, the app (and the researchers) will attempt to notify you to reopen it. Consistent prolonged failure to leave ODIN running is recorded and will impact the assessment of whether you participated in the study. It may even negatively impact your receiving study incentive payments.

Important Note 2. ODIN will periodically perform network tasks, which usually take about 2-3 seconds. During this time, it's important not to close the ODIN app. ODIN will let you know it is updating by displaying the following message screen (note the green loop arrow):
Important Note 3. Every couple of days iOS will notify you that ODIN is using your location. Make sure to click Always Allow.
Important Note 4. If ODIN notifies you that it has been closed, please try to open it as soon as possible. This could happen due to restarting the device, swipe killing the app, or if your iPhone decided that this app has not been used in a long time.
